Cubase Tutorial – Tech Tip 8 – Create Stereo Width in Cubase 5 (Vocals, Lead Sounds etc.)

2010 September 7

www.sonicacademy.com In this video we take a look at taking a single mono vocal sample and using a couple tricks, we widen it out to make it sound like it is playing in full stereo. This sort of effect is great for adding body to your vocals or even moving a lead line so that it is not sitting directly in the middle of your tune! a lot of stuff will sound better if you double track it. There are always tiny inconsistencies which will give it a ‘human’ feel that way…think of the old “Doors” records : they had a real depth in the vocals that way. The way it’s done here will sound ok in a heavy mix. You’ll hardly hear the difference…but still, try the old way. You might like it more.

I’m sorry but all your doing is producing a chorus/phasing effect. To make a good stereo width effect on vocals then you would have to use two different “takes” of vocal lines. This is what we call….”double tracking”. If you use the same, like in this video, then when listening on a mono radio or mono mix then you will just hear a chorus effect…

Buy your software. These guys (Steinberg) are enabling you to make your sonic dreams come true. The least you can do is buy the product.

then you are most likely pitch shifting it by whole semitones rather than just fine tuning the pitch

Very helpful, the second way is faster but the first way seems to give more width and it sounds better.

@Killedmykitten There are chorus effects that work that way, but the cubase chorus doesn’t. It’s easily perceivable in that the oscillatory effect produced by the two slightly out of tune signals move at an even pace. If there were variations in the pitch the oscillations would be uneven.
